Math Words

Math helps us work with numbers.

We use math every day.

We count things.

We work with money.

We measure things.

There are four basic math operations.

They are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

An operation is a math action.

1. Addition

Addition means putting numbers together.

We add numbers to find a total.

The total is called the sum.

The sign + means plus.

The sign = means equals.

Equals means the two sides have the same value.

2 + 3 = 5

We say, “Two plus three equals five.”

The sum is five.

You have two apples.

You get three more apples.

Now you have five apples.

Each number we add is called an addend.

Two and three are the addends.

2. Subtraction

Subtraction means taking one number away from another.

We subtract to find what is left.

The answer is called the difference.
